We have to send the message that we have President Obama's back and we will help him and his Democratic allies get elected so they continue making progress. Make sure you're supporting President Obama and Democratic candidates who support him. Ask your family, friends, neighbors, and others in our community to do the same.

Meet some of our featured candidates and learn more about our leaders in Congress.

  • JOYCE BEATTY

  • As an educator, healthcare administrator, and business owner, Joyce Beatty has been heavily involved in the Columbus community for years. Beatty continued her civic engagement by serving in the Ohio House of Representatives, where she was an aggressive advocate of her constituents. Beatty played a critical role passing legislation related to fighting foreclosures, improving the quality of education in Ohio's public schools, and helping women without health insurance gain access to lifesaving cancer screenings. Beatty's leadership on these issues led her peers to select her as Democratic Leader, becoming the first female to hold that position in Ohio's history. She is looking to continue her advocacy in Congress, and earlier this year she emerged victorious from a heavily contested Democratic primary in Ohio's 3rd district. The redrawn 3rd district is heavily Democratic, and Beatty is expected to win handily.
  • VAL DEMINGS

  • The youngest of seven children, Chief Val Demings was raised to believe she could achieve anything if she put her mind to it. Demings spent the early part of her career as a social worker dedicated helping children in foster care before joining the Orlando police force. Demings asserted her leadership skills as President of her class at the police academy, and quickly earned a reputation as a well respected officer committed to the safety and wellbeing of her community. She made history in 2007, becoming the first woman to ever be selected to serve as Chief for the Orlando Police Department. The leadership and integrity that Demings exhibited during her tenure on the force will allow her to be a strong advocate for middle class families, seniors, and small business owners in central Florida. • JOHN EWING

  • John Ewing has been a devoted public servant for three decades. Ewing's tenure as a police officer instilled in him the importance putting the safety and wellbeing of his community above all else. His time as a minster allowed him to develop close ties with the Omaha community and provide a positive influence in the lives of its residents. And his service as Douglas County's Treasurer has given him experience in managing large budgets and championing fiscal responsibility. Indeed, as the first African American Country Treasurer in Nebraska's history, John Ewing frequently faced tough decisions and responded so effectively that he ran unopposed for re-election in 2010. Ewing is seeking to use his experience as a public servant to fight for hardworking Nebraska families in Congress. After winning a competitive primary in Nebraska's second district back in May, Ewing is looking forward to an even more competitive matchup in the swing district this November.
  • STEVEN HORSFORD
  • Steven Horsford is natural leader who has dedicated his career to fighting for hard-working Nevada families, and is looking to continue that fight in Congress as a representative of Nevada's 4th district. Horsford was elected to the Nevada Senate in 2004 and was a highly effective lawmaker from the get-go. He quickly wrote and passed Nevada's "Clean Energy Jobs Initiative" and has since compiled an impressive legislative record on issues ranging from tax reform to our public schools. Because of this success, Horsford was selected by his peers to be Senate Majority Leader – becoming the first African American and youngest person to ever hold that position in the state of Nevada. As the Majority Leader, Horsford led the fight against Republican-proposed budget cuts that would have led to devastating teacher layoffs and a lower quality education for public school students. Horsford understands the needs of Nevada middle class families and the challenges they face, and will be a relentless advocate for them in Congress.
  • HAKEEM JEFFRIES
  • A product of Brooklyn, Jeffries has worked tirelessly to improve the community in which he grew up. As a child, Jeffries witnessed the hardships and obstacles public school students face every day, which led him to pursue a master's degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University and a law degree from the NYU School of Law. Jeffries returned to Brooklyn to serve his community, and was elected to the state Assembly in 2006. In his first six years of holding public office, Jeffries has earned a reputation as a reformer and an advocate for working class families. He has been praised for his accessibility by hosting "town halls" outside of local subway stops so that he can speak with his constituency about their hopes and needs. Jeffries is a tremendous advocate for affordable housing reform. He has launched Project Reclaim, an initiative designed to transform vacant luxury apartments throughout central Brooklyn into affordable homes for working and middle-class families, and Operation Preserve, a free housing clinic that provides legal representation and advice for residents confronting displacement, eviction or harassment. Now Jeffries hopes to broaden the scope of his service, by seeking to represent the constituents of the New York's 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • DONALD PAYNE JR.
  • Hailing from a long line of respected public servants, Donald Payne Jr. has an extensive record of fighting for Newark families. Payne has been a champion of progressive values as Newark's City Council President, and is looking to support these values in Congress as a representative of New Jersey's 10th congressional district. Before his tenure at the City Council, Payne served for two decades as a district leader in Newark's South Ward where he was the county's top vote-getter. In today's political environment, which has compelled many politicians to pursue devastating budget cuts, Payne fought back and has consistently been an unmistakable, powerful voice in favor of funding for children in Newark's public schools. He has also staunchly opposed painful cuts to health benefits for women and seniors. Payne won the Democratic primary in his Congressional district in a landslide due to an unwavering commitment to these progressive values and is expected emerge victorious in November's general election.
