Will Pete Olson Fire DeLay Advisors or Continue Culture of Corruption?

With convicted Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff and disgraced former Congressman Tom DeLay back in the headlines this week, the people of Texas' 22nd District is reminded of the culture of corruption that affected their district more than any other in the nation.

Yet, instead of distancing himself from these unethical figures, Republican Candidate Pete Olson (TX-22) is continuing to follow in Tom DeLay's footsteps, surrounding himself with DeLay's closest advisors.

In fact, FEC reports from Olson shows that he has paid over $90,000 to consultants that were also employed by DeLay since Olson began his campaign (see chart below).

"It's clear that Pete Olson has embraced the Republicans' Culture of Corruption, following in the footsteps of disgraced former Congressman Tom DeLay," said Kyra Jennings, Southern Regional Press Secretary at the DCCC.  "Pete Olson has paid DeLay's inner circle more than $90,000 to advise him, showing that he wants to bring the unethical behavior Tom DeLay became infamous for back to the district."

BACKGROUND

  • "Tom DeLay, the former House GOP majority leader whose connections to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff brought scandal and disgrace to the Republican party, returned to the spotlight in Minneapolis last night, helping to host a private party that drew hundreds of delegates and Republican officials." [ABC News, September 4, 2008]

  • Yesterday, Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff - who became synonymous with House Republicans' Culture of Corruption - was sentenced to four years in prison.

  •
    • "Abramoff admitted using luxury golf junkets, expensive meals, skybox tickets and other gifts to win political action on behalf of his clients. The scandal shook Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to Capitol Hill and contributed to Republicans losing control of Congress in 2006." [AP,  September 4, 2008]

  • Pete Olson has paid four firms with advisors who formerly worked for Tom DeLay a total of $90,389.41 during his campaign: Dana Benoit, Walden & Associates, Marathon Strategic Communications, and Hill Research [Fort Bend Now, 7/16/08; The Hill, 4/05/06].  A chart of every payment made by Olson through June 30, 2008, is below:
