Tim Griffin Backed By Defenders of British Petroleum

Yesterday the House Republican Study Committee (RSC) defended oil giant BP against the effort to hold them accountable for claims through a $20 billion escrow account. Since congressional candidate Tim Griffin agreed to “support values consistent with those espoused by the conservative Republican Study Committee,” when he got their endorsement, voters can only assume that he agrees with the RSC’s outrageous defense of BP.

"At a time when everyone agrees that BP should be held accountable for every dime of the economic and environmental catastrophe they caused, it's outrageous that Tim Griffin would join House Republicans in defending BP," said Jesse Ferguson of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Arkansas voters deserve better than Tim Griffin and his partisan loyalty to House Republicans and Big Oil’s agenda ahead of doing everything possible to hold BP fully accountable for jobs they destroyed and the environmental damage they caused."

Background

  • Yesterday, the Republican Study Committee, the policy arm of House Republicans, said:
  • “BP’s reported willingness to go along with the White House’s new fund suggests that the Obama Administration is hard at work exerting its brand of Chicago-style shakedown politics.  These actions are emblematic of a politicization of our economy that has been borne out of this Administration’s drive for greater power and control. [RSC; 6/16/10]
  • In order to be considered for a contribution from the House Conservatives Fund, candidates must fill out a questionnaire and support values consistent with those espoused by the conservative Republican Study Committee. [CQ-Roll Call, 3/10/10]
