NRCC Young Guns Shoot Blanks Again

Continuing the record of NRCC failure in getting who they believe to be the strongest candidate through competitive Republican primaries, NRCC recruit Hunt Downer failed to win his primary in Louisiana’s 3rd district this weekend – finishing a distant second to Tea Party backed Jeff Landry. The Louisiana Tea Party had targeted Downer for defeat [Times Picayune, 8/25/2010; Politico, 8/24/10]

“Another top NRCC recruit is in position to lose in a primary, as Hunt Downer finished a distant second to Jeff Landry in the GOP primary for Melancon's district on Saturday.” [Hotline, 8/30/2010]

Downer now faces a runoff against Landry on October 2, 2010.

Below are the other NRCC chosen candidates that have lost their races in 2010:

CA-19 – Richard Pombo

IA-02 – Rob Gettemy

SD-AL – Blake Curd

IA-03  - Jim Gibbons

KY-03 – Jeff Reetz

In addition to Downer, Virginia Republicans Robert Hurt and Scott Rigell both failed to capture fifty percent of the vote in their primaries and now face Tea Party candidates running against them in the general election as Independents.
