Fact Check: Tedisco’s Real Record on Taxes

Though the career politician likes to talk tough when it comes to lowering taxes, Tedisco's record tells an entirely different story.  In reality, Jim Tedisco voted to raise taxes while in the State Assembly a staggering 221 times on everything from sales taxes to property taxes.

RHETORIC: Jim Tedisco supports lowering taxes.

REALITY: Jim Tedisco voted to raise taxes a staggering 221 times while in the State Assembly.

Tedisco voted to raise or extend taxes 221 times.  Assemblyman Tedisco has voted to raise taxes on hard working families all across Upstate New York. He voted for tax increases on everything from mortgages in Columbia and Warren Counties to cell phones in Rensselaer, and he even voted to increase the sales tax in Dutchess County.

Tedisco opposed cutting property taxes for households earning under $250,000. In 2008, Tedisco voted against a bill that provided a credit against property taxes for households with incomes up to $250,000, and increased income tax rates for those with incomes over $1 million. It would provide a reduction in all real property taxes (County, School, City, Town, Village, Special District) paid based on taxpayer income. The bill provided for a 25 percent credit for gross household incomes of less than $90,000; a 20 percent credit for gross household incomes between $90,000 and $125,000; and a 15 percent credit for gross household incomes between $125,000 and $250,000. The bill passed 118 to 24. [A11838, 8/19/08]

New York has the highest local taxes in America. On Assemblyman Tedisco's watch, in just the last eight years, property taxes have gone up 54 percent. Tedisco also voted against property tax relief for homeowners making under $250,000 per year, and at the same time voted to give tax breaks to millionaires. [A11838, 8/19/08]
