FACT CHECK #3: Republican Allen West (FL-22) Continues to Lie About His Ties to Motorcycle Gang

Republican Allen West (FL-22) is continuing to lie about his connection to the Outlaws organized crime syndicate, his monthly columns in Wheels on the Road, a magazine that promotes the Outlaws motorcycle gang and denigrates women, and his plans to attend a Wheels on the Road rally.

LIE, VERSION #1:  First, West’s campaign said he never planned to attend.Allen West, the Republican challenging U.S. Rep. Ron Klein (D-Boca Raton), won't be at the biker rally in Pompano Beach tonight and never planned to attend, said his campaign manager Josh Grodin.” [Miami Herald, 10/16/10]

LIE, VERSION #2: Next, he said he had planned to spend the night with his family. West said, “I'm not going because its been a long day and I'm just going to be here with my wife and kids.” [National Journal, 10/16/10]

LIE, VERSION #3: While also implying that he was simply too tired to go.  “…West said he wouldn’t be attending after a busy day that included riding in an event to combat breast cancer.” [Palm Beach Post, 10/16/10]

FACT: West only canceled after the controversy became public.  A widely distributed flier for the rally prominently mentioned Allen West’s appearance and refers to him as “our next Congressman.” [Wheels on the Road website, 10/17/10; National Journal, 10/16/10; Miami Herald, 10/16/10]
