DCCC Statement on the Texas Map Decision

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released the following statement in response to the Texas Supreme Court’s decision to redraw district lines. The decision affects several districts that were unfairly drawn after Tom DeLay pushed to gerrymander congressional districts to benefit Republican incumbents.

The Texas’ 23rd district is considered to be the district most affected by the new map. Its current Representative Henry Bonilla voted with Tom DeLay 93% of the time during their time together in Congress. Bonilla also supports President Bush 92% of the time and the Republican Party line 97% of the time.

“Today’s court ruling is a victory for Texas voters. For the second time in two days, our judicial system has rejected Tom DeLay and Henry Bonilla’s attempts to hijack our electoral process and strip Hispanic voters of their rights,” said Bill Burton, communications director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “It’s time for a new direction because Texas families are sick of the failed leadership of Henry Bonilla and his buddies in Washington.”
