House Republicans Vote Against America’s Seniors
Putting the interests of millionaires before America's seniors, today House Republicans voted against providing seniors $250 to cover their Social Security cost of living increase. Republicans' vote against covering the Social Security cost of living increase that is helping seniors make ends meet comes just one week after they voted to give millionaires a tax break that increases the deficit.
Background
- The Seniors Protection Act (H.R. 5987) will provide 54 million seniors with a one-time payment of $250 given that there will be no automatic Cost-of-Living-Adjustment for America’s seniors in 2011. [HR 5987, #611, 12/8/10]
- This $250 payment will help seniors, veterans, railroad retirees and people with disabilities who receive Social Security make ends meet during this tough time, when housing values are down, other retirement income is volatile, and many are facing rising expenses.
- Because of the tough economic conditions in America, for the first time ever, 2011 will be the second consecutive year that Social Security retirees and other beneficiaries will receive no automatic increase in their monthly Social Security, SSI, VA Pension and Compensation, and Railroad Retirement benefits.
- This legislation is supported by veterans and seniors organizations, including AARP, Alliance for Retired Americans, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, the Disabled American Veterans, and Military Officers Association of America.
